My Stay at The Barn, Beachspoke Holiday Rental

Beachspoke holiday rentals recently contacted me to see if I could lend my local expertise to an East Devon Food & Drink guide. In return for my recommendations, I was invited to try one of their unique destinations for myself…

As we drove down the hedgerow-lined lanes of the picturesque village of Cotleigh and finally saw the sign for ‘The Barn’, we were excited to discover what the property had in store. For starters, the images of The Barn on the Beachspoke website are gorgeous. The rental is set within the grounds of a gorgeous country house, with unspoilt 360 views of the surrounding Blackdown Hills. So, as our tires crunched along the long gravel drive to the main property, I knew I was about to experience some serious house envy…

The Barn oozes quintessential ‘country’ chic, thanks to its thatched roof and the autumnal ivy that clings to its stone walls. Stepping up to the front door, we were greeted by a charming little Wellington boot door knocker and as we walked inside we were pleased to find that the website’s images do the property justice…

As the name suggests, the property is set across the first floor of a converted thatched barn, and it boasts a beautiful double bedroom with en-suite shower at one side of the property and a contemporary open kitchen and living space at the other. Linking both of these areas together is a stylish bathroom space, complete with a gorgeous roll-top bathtub and privacy screen. The whole place was beautifully decorated and I couldn’t wait to settle in for the night and make believe that The Barn was my own private studio.

Upon arrival, a complimentary bottle of Domaine J Laurens sat waiting for us, along with postcards to send back home (I suspect guests usually live more than 10 miles away..) and a guide to the property and local area. There are plenty of great restaurants and pubs within driving distance of The Barn, but as a local myself, I was quite content to stay in and cook for ourselves during our stay.  We arrived at sunset, so after a quick trip to the local supermarket for provisions, we cracked open the complimentary bottle of fizz and made the most of The Barn’s extensive collection of board games whilst streaming our own music via their bluetooth speakers.

I won’t lie, there’s something a little bit eerie about being in the middle of the sticks at nighttime. But The Barns thick walls and beautiful decor quickly take your mind off this and it’s all worth it for the stunning, unspoilt sunrise you get to watch from the comfort of the bedroom in the morning.

Our stay at The Barn was exactly what I had hoped it would be – a relaxing getaway complete with all the home comforts and little luxuries one would expect from a bespoke holiday rental. I’m already looking at other Beachspoke properties for potential trips to Cornwall and the Cotswolds and I wouldn’t hesitate to book through the company in the future. Everything you need to know prior to your stay is conveniently emailed over to you ahead of time, including a list of things to do locally and ideas for places to eat nearby.

If you’ve been won over by The Barn yourself, you should know that the property usually requires a minimum stay of three nights at £118/night. Small to medium sized dogs are also welcome for an additional £30 and they even provide dogs bowls in the property. During your visit, I recommend booking dinner at the nearby Pig at Combe, The Holt, or The Jack in the Green. There are also plenty of lovely walks in the local area to take advantage of and the nearby Jurassic coast and the seaside town of Beer are well worth the short car journey.
